EuroSafe Imaging Reflects on a Successful ECR 2025: Advancing Radiation Protection Together
Following the conclusion of the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2025, EuroSafe Imaging reflects on the key moments that defined its participation. From 26 February to 2 March, EuroSafe Imaging took a central role, collaborating with stakeholders, sharing knowledge, and advancing the field of radiation protection in medical imaging. Here’s a look back at our activities and contributions to the event.
EuroSafe Imaging Sessions: Raising the Bar for Radiation Protection
EuroSafe Imaging had one of its busiest programmes to date at ECR 2025, with a total of 12 sessions covering a range of topics related to radiation protection in medical imaging, including the use of advanced radiologic modalities in children, the effects of low-dose radiation on human health, assessment of AI-based methods for image reconstruction and improvement, implementing diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) in clinical practice, and CT imaging during childhood and early adulthood.
EuroSafe Imaging was also thrilled to offer several free, open-access sessions at ECR 2025, ensuring that vital knowledge about radiation protection reached an even wider audience. Recordings of these sessions are available to watch on demand for free:
- CT in health assessment of asymptomatic individuals: a framework for good governance: provided an overview of the WHO publication on justification of CT for individual health assessments of asymptomatic people, that addresses the intended public health benefits vs potential harms as well as the costs, ethics and service implications for individuals and society.
- ESR iGuide: opportunities and obstacles in implementing radiology referral decision support: covered experiences of radiology referral decision support system implementation in different countries and how clinical decision support (CDS) can enhance clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.
- Communication champions: a proposal to support improved patient communications: introduced a proposal to promote communication champions within radiology departments to support radiologists and radiographers in developing ongoing strategies for improving patient communication across the board. Radiation protection related case studies were presented.
- Workforce planning and how to solve the workforce challenge in radiology: The European Union radiation, education, staffing and training (EU-REST) study: examined the results of the EU-REST study and its recommendations, following the recent publication of the final report.
- Working in partnership towards highest quality and safety in imaging: implementing the SAMIRA Action Plan of the European Commission: this joint session with EIBIR discussed the implementation of the quality and safety pillar of the European Commission Strategic Agenda for Medical Ionising Radiation Applications (SAMIRA Action Plan). It provided updates on results and recommendations from recently concluded and ongoing European projects of the ESR and EIBIR.
To wrap up our activities, EuroSafe Imaging hosted an open-access studio session highlighting ongoing initiatives designed to enhance and reinforce medical radiation protection across Europe and beyond, such as our successful webinar series. The session also covered EuroSafe Imaging’s cooperation with the IAEA and provided an overview of the EU-JUST-CT project’s conclusions and its key findings. This session is available to watch on demand for free, here.
Poster Exhibition: Showcasing Innovations
EuroSafe Imaging once again featured an electronic poster exhibition, available at the EPOS™ area. The exhibition highlighted results from radiation protection-related projects and research, giving attendees the opportunity to explore innovative approaches to medical radiation protection.
EuroSafe Imaging Booth: Engaging with the Community
EuroSafe Imaging also had a presence with a booth, located on Level 1 of the Austria Center. This year, the booth attracted countless visitors who were eager to learn more about our ongoing initiatives and how we are advocating for better radiation protection policies and practices across Europe and beyond. Presenting the opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals and build stronger networks to promote safety in medical imaging.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Mission
As ECR 2025 concludes, EuroSafe Imaging remains committed to advancing radiation protection in medical imaging. The success of our sessions, studio events, and ongoing interactions with the community has further strengthened our resolve to continue providing essential educational resources, promoting best practices, and supporting initiatives that safeguard both patients and professionals alike.
Stay tuned for more updates on our work in the coming months. Thank you for joining us at ECR 2025 and for your continued support in advancing radiation protection globally.
